THE BREAKOUT

my two-part breakout:
part one: a visit with my dear friends the godshalls and hendrix's.
highlights:
  • seeing natalie and matthew's delicious children isaiah (3) and alaythia (10 months.)
  • hearing isaiah respond to one of my suggestions, "good idea, jules!"
  • morning in bed with alaythia, snuggling and crawling all over me in her sleeperjammies.
  • breakfast at the heathman with natalie, wonderful food and heart conversation.
  • day with donna driving around vancouver, shopping and lunch on 23rd street in portland-talking all the while.
  • eating chicken-pesto pasta with artichoke hearts and sundried tomatoes, and tirimasu at a little italian place downtown.
  • seeing adam and emily's place in albany--a contempory, metropolitan loft above an old antique store in a little, country town.

part two: visit carolyn and rick in eugene and attend the opening of carolyn's art exhibit.
highlights:

  • the opening of her botanical collection exhibit at the quaintest little"wine shop" in eugene. i am so proud of my sister (in law)! check out her website at http://www.cmgates.com/.
  • meeting carolyn and rick's friends at the opening. wonderful people of so many different interests! got to know scott, who three weeks ago, hit black ice while biking to work and broke his femur. this was his first outing since his surgery, where they put a two-foot rod in his leg. talked with sister margaret, who at the age of 91 teaches art therapy to the inmates at the local prison. i asked her how she stays so sharp and healthy, and she looked straight into my eyes and answered, "i love life, and i am passionate about what i do." amazing.
  • back at the house for a small reception, i got to know lori. she and another guest (who also had just met) were showing each other various tai chi moves. after watching for awhile, i, knowing nothing of the sport, decided to get up off the couch, take off my coat and my shoes, and, with her permission, take the challenge of trying to break through her martial art barrier and take a punch at her. she gently blocked 3 or 4 punches--to the face, to the stomach--and then grabbed my arm and flipped me to the ground. we laughed, she taught me some of her moves, and by the end of the evening, i felt like i had known her for years.
  • breakfast at a cool, hippie joint with car & rick.
  • our long walk around their hilly neighborhood. looking at the homes. crisp, sunny, beautiful.
  • watching "once" (one of my favorite movies of the year).
this trip was so rich with relationships and beauty and fun! thank you alan for taking up the slack at home so i could break out. i love you!

Julie, Rick gave me the heads up on your blog comment about meeting me. What fun to read. I too, had a wonderful evening and completely enjoyed our encounter. The Tai Chi was great fun, but the conversation even better. I hope we see each other again. You are delightful. Lori
