it happens every four years.
the olympic spirit enters our home via our tv screen, and alan and i are transformed into maniacs. okay, so how many of you out there watched the opening ceremonies in beijing last night and weren't moved as the US favorite athletes--some of the best athletes in the world-- looked us straight in the eyes in the opening collage and said, "it's not the triumph, but the struggle."?
for the next two weeks we will spend more time "training" than we do any other time during the rest of the four years. we get inspired, what can i say? we begin setting goals for our running, our biking, our swimming, our fencing (just kidding). we pull out the ping-pong table, shoot hoops, beg the kids to do volleyball drills with us. it's a serious illness, i'm telling you.
just now, alan coaxed, he pleaded, he begged maddie to go outside and play some volleyball, and she just plain didn't want to.
slightly annoyed, she said, "i'm tired. and you guys are weird!"
"it's olympic fever!" i answered cheerily.
"then you guys need some medicine." she said as she walked out of the room.
what could we say?

I think it's the music. You can't hear the song and not be inspired.

Amen to Olympic Fever!!! We LOVE the whole spectacle. I want to rent 5 dvrs so that we can record the shooting, the rowing, the judo, the wrestling....I could watch the Olympics for the next 11 months!! =) I don't get how some folks don't get it. Go U.S.A.!!!
For me, it's the perseverance that it demonstrates. There's a lot to be said about perseverance. Couldn't believe it when Phelp's coach knew when he was 11 that he had something special. He seemed to know it was REALLY special. And Michael persevered.
Go USA. We are watching until midnight every night! GO NAPPING!
