confessions of a flakey blogger

why have i had such an aversion to bogging for these past two months?  it's not that i haven't had anything to write about.  we have had plumbing explosions, volleyball championship games, and our daughters lived through the westmont fires, for goodness sake.

so why the silence?  here are a few of the reasons i can think of:

1.  it takes a lot of time.

2. when i do have the luxury of down-time, i have turned to facebook.  but there is a cost to this.  in my mind, facebook is craft, while blogging is (at least potentially) art.  it requires more of me, but offers a bigger reward, like most things that take time.

3. that nagging, reoccurring blogger-demon feeling: "who the heck really cares about my life?  isn't it a bit presumptuous to assume that anybody would want to read what i have to say?"

4.  not wanting to present a phony, all-rosy picture, but also not wanting to publish for the world the struggles and pain of my daily, inner life. (if anybody has tips on how to walk this tightrope, let me know.)

but you know what?  in spite of all the reasons not to blog, I MISS IT.  i miss writing.  it is good for me to write.  it is like air for me.  and i like having the record of some of the highlights of life for my family.  it is good for us to reflect.  it is good to remember how God has provided and protected and been present, and how His grace fills even the funky, earthy, messy pockets of mundane life.

so here, today, i state my intentions--on this, the metaphorical evening of 2008--to write more more freely, more purposefully, more often this coming year.

My rule of thumb for avoiding getting too personal is that if it's written after 10p it must be saved and re-read in the morning before posting. That generally saves me from the "morning-after regret." But I agree that the one sentence facebook status updates are easier and do sometimes replace the impulse to blog.

I like to read your blogs whenever you have the time to write them! It is amazing to me that we are now able to keep up with those we don't see regularly! Technology can be a demanding but wonderful thing!=0)
