last night, we martins decorated our Christmas tree. while many things have changed over all the years we have been doing this together, many things remain the same.
here are the traditions: we always have pizza for dinner. we always play the "John Denver and the Muppets" CD, while we hang the ornaments. each of us has a few special ornaments that have "stories" attached. every year we retell the stories and laugh at the wonderfully funky, homemade ornaments the kids made in preschool.
erica's favorite ornament is dr. kitty. she bought him when she was three years old at a quaint little store in lake arrowhead. she fell in love with him as soon as she saw him, and had him named before we ever left the store. his name says it all. he is a kitty, and he is dressed up like a doctor. he is, quite simply, dr. kitty. it's mysterious, this relationship between erica and dr. kitty. she loved him when she was little, and at 19 years old, she loves him now for the simple fact that, all these years, she has loved him so well. i guess it's not so mysterious after all.
(after we finished the decorating, rather than sitting around the newly-lit tree, talking and sipping egg-nog, we decided to see who could jump up and touch the wood on the floor of our loft. we are a strange family.)
