the stomach flu hit maddie this morning at 4:00 a.m. it is a really bad one, poor baby. after one of our many trips to the bathroom in the dark morning hours, she slumped down on the cold tile floor and said, "this is one of my least favorite things." a few hours later, she added, "i would rather have a shot, or have air blown into my eyes." (the glaucoma test at the optometrist.) just so you know, both experiences are extremely high on her list of "least favorite things."
what is it about them when they are sick? or what is it that their illness brings out in us mothers? it's almost like we're both taken back to their infancy, when they look to us to meet every need. when the relationship is pure and uncomplicated, and we are about one thing and one thing alone--providing comfort, relief, nurture, love.
of course i hope it ends for her soon. there is nothing i want more for her than to see her smiling, laughing, eating, dancing around the house. but in this time there is a sweetness. a place of waiting and being and doing this tummy-bug thing together. she wouldn't want to do it without me, and there is nowhere else i would rather be.

praying that beej gets better soon. it wasn't until i was married that i threw up without my mom...and my new husband knew i needed her. i had told him many times how she holds my hair and rubs my back...so when i finally had to do it with out her he filled in. you would never wish sickness on your children, but snuggle time is the best!!! you're one of the best mama's j.v.
nattie, it's so funny that you would say about your mom that "she holds my hair and rubs my back." lornie was with beej upstairs for her first throw-up of the night and in the morning beej told me, "lauren held my hair and rubbed my back just like you do." those were her exact words, i'm not kidding. it must be a mom thing, passed down nonverbally from generation to generation. (:
So sorry to hear that Maddie is sick with the stomach flu. I am praying that she will quickly recover. I am glad that she has you and her sisters to care for her. I send her lots of hugs and kisses(from a distance!)
Love,
mom
